Lo que alguna vez consideramos como herramientas inofensivas para comunicarnos y conectarnos con el mundo, ahora son instrumentos que recopilan, analizan y comercian con nuestros datos. Una de las plataformas más críticas en este proceso es WhatsApp, que, junto con su empresa matriz, Meta (anteriormente conocida como Facebook), ha hecho de la explotación de nuestros datos su negocio más lucrativo.

Recientemente, en un experimento curioso, decidí preguntarle a la inteligencia artificial (IA) de Meta por qué grababa mis metadatos personales. Entonces, la pregunta es: ¿Cómo es que saben cuándo estoy disponible? ¿Cómo es posible que puedan alinearse perfectamente con mis momentos de conexión?

La respuesta es perturbadora: están observando cada movimiento que hacemos. Los vendedores, teleoperadores y compañías de marketing están utilizando esta información en tiempo real para maximizar sus oportunidades de venta. WhatsApp, y por extensión Meta, no solo saben cuándo estamos conectados, sino que también están compartiendo esta información con quienes estén dispuestos a pagar por ella. Es una invasión directa a nuestra privacidad.

Un negocio multimillonario a costa de nuestra privacidad

El modelo de negocio detrás de Meta es más que evidente: recopilar la mayor cantidad de datos posible, procesarlos, analizarlos y venderlos al mejor postor. Este ecosistema de vigilancia no solo es preocupante, sino que también es una clara violación de nuestros derechos como usuarios. Las compañías tecnológicas, en su búsqueda insaciable por obtener más ganancias, han rebasado los límites de lo que es ético y aceptable. Lo más grave es que, a pesar de que existen normativas sobre la protección de datos, las empresas siguen encontrando formas de eludirlas o de manipularlas a su favor.

Estamos viviendo en una sociedad donde la privacidad es cada vez más una ilusión. Si bien existen alternativas a WhatsApp, Instagram y Facebook, el monopolio que Meta tiene sobre nuestras interacciones sociales es difícil de romper. Las alternativas que ofrecen mayor privacidad suelen ser menos populares, lo que dificulta la transición para la mayoría de los usuarios.
